Management consultant Raymond Ng recently told me that he had changed his marketing strategy over 200 times. I admire his tenacity and learner mindset.

My good friend Wee Lin, whom I look up to as an innovator, entrepreneur, and marketing guru said to me, “Lots of people have got their market strategy in place when their product isn’t even fully developed. You have a good product. But you have not got your marketing plan in place.”

Marketing is about understanding the people I am want to connect with and putting into their hands what I have and can offer. It’s been almost seven months since I started out my Digital Storytelling Asia social enterprise. I’m learning what doesn’t work (at the moment). How can anyone want what they don’t know about or understand?

Digital storytelling has so much to offer to make life better. But until it is seen as both a need and a want, it will only remain with the few who have felt its magic.

Commenting about the first car he ever built, Henry Ford said:  ”If I’d asked my customers what they wanted, they’d have said a faster horse.”

He also said, “If there is any one secret of success, it lies in the ability to get the other person’s point of view and see things from that person’s angle as well as from your own.”

I am learning to listen to the market. Digital storytelling is what people want, but don’t yet know that they want it.

I never saw the power of Twitter till I saw it in action.

Unknown to me, tweets were being tweeted while I was giving the keynote address (and also throughout the day) at the International Digital Storytelling Festival (DS6) in Aberystwyth, Wales on 17 June. This one for instance said,

Rydw i wedi cael fy ysbrydoli gan Angeline Koh, siaradwr 1af #ds6

I ran that through Google Translate. It immediately detected it as Welsh. It said,

I’ve been really inspired by Angeline Koh, speaker first # ds6

As a result of the Tweets, people who were not at the Festival got wind of the event. I received this email

Hi Angeline,

Great to see so much coverage of your keynote address at DS6 at Aberystwyth University. How long are you in Wales for?

I’m from Singapore and have just graduated from my journalism course here. I’ve got to admit to an immense sense of nationalistic pride which arose when I saw someone from home inspiring so many here. I’m truly sorry I couldn’t be there for DS6. Judging from Twitter, many people here are spurred on from the topics you covered. Different cultures; with so much to learn about each other.

I was wondering if you would have time for an interview, over the phone, or in person? I’m doing my placement at Media Wales, the publishers of the South Wales Echo and the Western Mail, Wales’ national newspaper. I would love to file a story or interview about yourself and your work around digital storytelling.

I am humbled by the opportunity I have to represent Singapore and Asia in Digital Storytelling. I copied the Tweets that were sent during the course of the day and sent out a Tweet myself…

I was delighted to find this video clip put up by Esko Reinikainen. I met Digital Storytelling veteran Joe Lambert in July 2010 when I visited the Center for Digital Storytelling. Joe spent time with me and my digital storytelling team during his visit to Singapore in September 2010. A lot of what he said in this video were things he also told us during our time with him.

DS5 International Digital Storytelling Festival in Aberystwyth, Wales, June 16th, 2010
Brought to you by DSCymru and Aberystwyth Arts Centre

I found an old tin box among my father’s things. It gave me clues to who I am, why I love to write, take photos, and I care about the people and things that happen around me.

2010 has been a year of adventures for me…

  • January – Aurelia and I taught our first public digital storytelling workshop under the National Book Development Council of Singapore.
  • April – I registered Digital Storytelling Asia as a sole proprietor / entrepreneur.
  • July to August – Aurelia and I made our 46-day journey to the USA. We spent time with friends, got further training at the Center for Digital Storytelling (CDS), taught a digital storytelling (DS) workshop to Navigator staff, and made a presentation to 90+ Christians involved with the Arts and Media.
  • September – I left the Navigators Singapore officially after 22 years of ministry.
  • September – Aurelia and I co-directed the Asian Digital Storytelling Congress held at the National Museum and organised by the National Book Development Council of Singapore. God linked me with key movers of digital storytelling. We are now linked on four continents (USA, Australia, UK, and Asia). God gave me a digital storytelling mentor (formerly from BBC UK). He is a man who loves Jesus. CDS (USA) where the digital storytelling movement started endorsed Digital Storytelling Asia.
  • October – I turned 50 on 8 October.
  • Aurelia went back to the Philippines after the Ministry of Manpower rejected her application to renew her employment pass with the Navigators.
  • November – I had to run Digital Storytelling Asia alone… God started to bring others with a vision and heart for to tell stories. We began to meet weekly. I was invited me to introduce digital storytelling to 30+ people from 18 countries who are involved with arts and media.
  • December - God approved Aurelia’s Employment Pass application. She is now a staff member of Digital Storytelling Asia!
  • In all Au and I have run 13 workshops since March 2009 – in Singapore, Philippines, and the USA.

What a year!
